The new site has a few cool features, like the ability to change the style of the site on the fly (look for the StyleSwitcher section in the right Sidebar) and a "live" search capability which will searh the site as you type (also in the right Sidebar).

It's been on my to-do list for a long time now but I finally took the first steps towards redesigning the KashubaWorld website. I have no creative or artistic abilities whatsoever so I did some searching and found some tools (free, of course) that I was able to use.

The first thing I needed was a template — graphics, styles, fonts — the whole works. I found a great collection of free templates at the Open Source Web Design site. The site is nicely laid out and has quite a collection of different styles and templates. One of the more useful features of the site is the ability to see real web pages that were built based on the various templates available.

I ended up using a theme called "andreas04″. One of the reasons I picked that theme was because there's also a WordPress theme based on andreas04 and I liked the continuity between the main website and this blog. I haven't been able to find similar themes for the KashubaWorld forum and/or wiki but I'm planning to use that as an excuse to figure out how to do it myself.

Having a theme that you like is nice but it doesn't make a website all by itself. I also found a nice open-source HTML editor called NVU that worked quite well for me. I plugged in the theme and created the new look in just an hour or two. Not too bad.
